In addition to a show and tell of their latest work, we’ll also follow the process of taking a design from initial sketch to digitized versions to production.
We’re grateful to the Denver Architecture Foundation and President and CEO Meg Touborg for their support and sponsorship of Denver Design Social.
Founded in 1990, the Denver Architecture Foundation continues to champion the deep-rooted connections between architecture, education and community-building through diverse and expanding programs. DAF is a unique organization in the Denver area, fulfilling strong public interest in local architecture and its relevance in shaping Denver’s past, present and future. As the city continues to experience unprecedented growth, DAF’s importance also grows – and we have responded by expanding and enhancing program offerings for all people living, working and studying in the Mile High City
MEG TOUBORG’S DENVER MUST DO’s
-
TO EAT:
Denver is definitely an emerging “foodie” city with some wonderful, local options. Reservations are almost always needed.
The Regular : Designed by Meg’s friend Adam Harding of Roth Sheppard and the fabulous husband/wife duo Syd Younggreen and Brian De Souza. Gorgeous interiors and impeccable cocktails + dining.
Major Tom: Beautiful small spot (somewhat hidden) in the heart of Rino, the arts district. Great wines, food, and vibes. Same ownership as Beckon which is a fabulous tasting, chef's counter restaurant but much more of a commitment on your calendar and pocketbook.
Sap Sua: also a husband / wife duo in a pretty setting, serving innovative and non-traditonal Vietnamese dishes.
Uchi: Non traditional Japanese in a lovely setting designed by Tres Birds. They have restaurants in other cities but this one feels unique and not like it is part of a (gasp) chain.
City o City: Fabulous vegetarian / vegan restaurant for breakfast and lunch and walking distance from the Denver Art Museum. Looks like a dive. The food is so good!
Leven Deli: Jewish deli meets wine bar. Also “only in Denver” vibes. Around the corner from Denver Art Museum.
Cart Driver: Amazing wood fired pizza and sophisticated starters and sides. Indoor / outdoor. I love the setting in Rino.
-
TO DRINK:
COCKTAILS
“Denver is a young people’s “brewery” town and people will say let’s grab a beer the way other cities say grab a drink.”
Following are Meg’s finds for when you want a real cocktail / mocktail and a certain ambience…
Forget me not: pretty setting ( indoor/outdoor) in Cherry Creek North for cocktails in a former flower shop.
The Cruise Room: swank bar in the Oxford Hotel near Union Station.
The Cooper Lounge: on the 2nd floor of Union Station, it is a super chic bar and light bites spot. It is closed for renovations now so mark for your next visit.
Death + Co.: there is one in NYC too but don’t let that deter you from stopping by this handsome spot in the Ramble Hotel in Rino.
COFFEE
“Little known fact: Denver is filled with super cool coffee places, particularly in adaptive reuse settings. You almost can’t go wrong but most of us have our favorite. Here are just a few of mine:”
Steam Espresso Bars : two locations, both really fabulous.
Metropolis Coffee: multiple locations but the one in Golden Triangle is walkable from the Denver Art Museum
Crema: two locations in Rino, one is in the Denver Central Market with different food stalls
-
TO DO:
“Denver has a few really special museums and several “micro-districts” within renovated and repurposed buildings and warehouses. One of my favorites is The Dairy Block”
You will have a chance to visit the Denver .Art Museum during Denver Design Social of course, but here are some other places to check out:
Denver Botanic Gardens: a lovely site for a stroll among beautiful plants and water features! Great gift shop too.
Clyfford Still Museum: next to the Denver Art Museum and a must do. Read about it then go.
American Museum of Western Art: quirky hours but try to make it to see the finest collection of western (U.S) art anywhere
Kirkland Museum of Decorative Arts: Nice collection of various objects in a cool Olson Kundig designed building two blocks from Denver Art Museum.
Here are two contemporary art galleries with knowledgeable staff and interesting exhibits. Both are walkable from the Denver Art Museum:
William Havu Gallery and Walker Fine Art
SHOPPING
While there are some nice independent clothing boutiques, most of their wares can be found in your home cities. A few places I like to go for gifts and or vintage finds:
Sacred Thistle, Modern Nomad Home, Homebody
Antiques etc: A few vendors have great booths for discoveries. If you like 70’s Dansk, this is your place!
Kouture Consignment: can have some good fashion and shoe finds.
For the yogis among you, I love the teachers and atmosphere at the River Studios. One is in Golden Triangle, walkable from the Denver Art Museum.
